Lake Illawarra
Entrance Works

Aerial photographs 28 April 2006:

NB: See Thumbnail galleries - Lake Illawarra Entrance Works on the News Centre pages (click above or on the contents index at left) for many more relevant photographs:

(Above) The silted-up Lake Illawarra entrance prior to works beginning on the new northern breakwater. Note on the left part of the already standing 'wall' is actually the stockpile of basalt boulders that will be used to construct the northern breakwater. The basalt was sourced from the relatively recently completed North Kiama Bypass Project.

(Above) We can see that large volumes of sand are constantly pushed into the lake entrance from ocean flows off Perkins Beach. Before the southern training breakwater was constructed sand was also washed into the lake entrance from Warilla Beach on the southern side. The photo shows how shallow Lake Illawarra actually is. The world class surf break of Windang Island lies in the background.
