Black Swan
Cygnus atratus
The largest concentrations of Black Swans, often over
500 birds, occur in association with macro-algae and seagrass beds off Windang Peninsula, Whyjuck Bay,
Koong-Burry Bay and Griffins Bay. A large influx of 2212 Black Swans was recorded on the lake on 7
February 1991. Swans feed on the roots and shoots of the seagrasses and utilise the lake as a
reliable feeding ground.

Royal Spoonbill
Platalea regia
Spoonbills are white, long-legged deepwater
waders recognised by their black spoon-shaped bills. They feed by wading slowly, swishing their
bills from side to side, relying on hair-trigger reflexes to snap up any aquatic creature touched.
They can therefore fish productively in muddy water. The Royal Spoonbill is a common bird of the lake
margins. Flocks of 20 or more can be seen in most months on the lake.
